The flooding from storm Desmond on 5 December was pretty devastating. Over half a metre of muddy, chemically contaminated water caused more damage than my worst expectations.

In all of this process Lucy was a massive help, offering practical advice, helping chase the insurers when things got bogged down and being firmly on our side when we didn’t agree with proposals made by the loss adjustor. Her calm and structured approach was a huge morale booster at a difficult time. Without such an efficient service we would not have been able to “continue as normal” and get our centre re-built so quickly.

So whats the problem with the USA?

There isn’t actually anything different in exporting to the USA than any other market, its just that UK insurers are not always falling over themselves to accommodate products liability insurance due to the litigation process and more importantly the potential cost involved.

Many insurers won’t offer product liability insurance for these territories, some will probably only go to 15% or 20% at the outside, some insurers higher depending on the product. There are the specialists however who don’t have a problem, even up to 100% exports.

Where can the problems lie?

  • Mainstream insurers can decline to offer terms when turnovers exceed 15% to 20%.

  • They are not happy with the type of products, or the product is considered too high risk.

  • They can’t provide USA product liability insurance due to their own internal restrictions such as re-insurance.
